Frequently Asked Questions - Individual Tax Returns

General information

It has been brought to our attention by some of our customers that when filing amended returns online it doesn't automatically change the figures with HMRC (both personal and corporate) as a manual amendment is needed at their end. This manual amendment by HMRC does not always take place.  In some cases you may have to phone HMRC to get them to update their system.

Q: I have a brought forward loss in the CGT pages that appears to be the capital gain from the clients 2008 return?

A: Where 2008 capital gains details had been entered for any asset types ‘Land & Property’, ‘Attributable to Settlor’, ‘Other disposals’, ‘Att. gains from non-res. Trusts (benef.)’ and ‘Att. Gains from settler interested trusts’ then in the first release in April 2009 any gains were being incorrectly transferred into the ‘Losses B/Fwd 95/96 and earlier’ field visible in the 2009 Capital Gains data entry screen.  This means that brought forward losses available against the first later capital gain, or total losses available to carry forward, would be misstated.

Any cases where the client had a 2008 capital gain will need to have the first subsequent gain reviewed, especially where no capital gains arise for 2008/09 as otherwise these mis-stated losses may be carried forward indefinitely.

Q: I am running version 4.41-0 of Tax Platform and can prepare a 2009 return for FBI but when I try to print the return I get a message that says “a return cannot be submitted online later that 5 April after the year of the return.”
A: this issue will be resolved if you have bought and updated to the 2010 version of Tax Platform. If you haven’t yet purchased or installed the 2010 software an update to 2009 can be accessed by clicking the spanner icon of Tax Platform, Support / Web updates tab and then “Connect to the web and check for updates” this will update the 2009 software to version 4.43.

FAQ’s following installation of 2010

Q: when I try to run the transfer forward in Tax Platform after installing 2010 I get an error message, EC – 3265, M – item not found in headers collection?

Q: I have completed a tax return with CGT pages showing the disposal of some quoted shares but when I try to prepare the files for FBI I get “Error code: 6397, Type: business
There is an entry in box 19 on page CG1, box 16 on page CG1 and box 17 on page CG1 must be present.”

Q: I have run a tax calculation and I am not getting Payments on Account
A: There are a number of reasons why the POAs wont appear, one will be if the liability is less than £1000 and so Payments on Account are not applicable. The second reason is that on the tax calculation you have ticked to say to include the liability below £2000 to be collected through the PAYE tax code. The third option is that more than 80% of tax paid is met from tax paid at source and therefore payments on account are not due. To clarify when you have the tax calculation open on screen, if you click onto "Full working sheets" and then preview calc you can see the full calculation of payments on account in section 13

If you do get this issue if you go into “returns sent to clients for signing” and click reprint for the appropriate return it should then print all the pages.

Q: "In cases where foreign tax claimed as a deduction in box 58 exceeds the income in box FPS55 and results in a loss, system validation prevents a negative value from being entered in FPS59"
