Frequently Asked Questions - Partnership Returns

Q: I am trying to file a partnership return online and getting an error " Error code 8205: Type Business
The entry must be valid against the UTR algorithm."
A: This suggests that the UTR number is invalid or in an incorrect format. When filing partnership returns though it does require a valid UTR number for the partnership and the individual partners, otherwise HMRC will reject the return online

Q: I am running version 5.112-0 of Tax Platform and completed a partnership return but when I try to prepare for FBI I get an error "6627 - box [3.83] is valid if [3.10]!='no' or [3.93]!='no', or alternatively if one of the following conditions is met: if [3.26] is present and non-negative, then this must equal [3.26]; otherwise, if [3.26] is absent and [3.73] is non negative then this must equal [3.73]
A: This issue has been resolved in version 5.114-0 of Tax Platform which can be downloaded from the updates section of the website or through the spanner icon of Tax Platform

Q: I have completed a partnership return but when I’m trying to file the return online I am getting the message “where there are entries in 7.7a, 7.8a and 7.9a the return cannot file by FBI. To file by FBI enter the details on Boxes 7.7, 7.8 and 7.9 of the partnership savings pages ( and carry forward to boxes 7.19 and 7.20 as appropriate)
A: This is an HMRC restriction and if need to use boxes 7.7a, 7.8a, and 7.9a, then you will need to file on paper. Alternatively, you can remove the entries from 7.7a, 7.8a, 7.9a and complete the boxes 7.7, 7.8 and 7.9 on the partnership savings pages.

Q: I am trying to file a partnership return online with more than 1 trade or accounting period and I am getting a message to say it is a HMRC online filing special case
A: There is a workaround you need to follow to file partnership returns online with more than one accounting period or trade. To do this within PTP you need to do the following
1) Complete the return as normal, including the 2nd or subsequent trade(s)
2) Before preparing the file for FBI, click Print tax Return on the Client Tax Returns screen
3) Click on the Select Schedules button and then Clear and then Close on the subsequent window that is displayed
4) Click Clear on the main Print Tax Form screen and then tick Supporting Schedules and click Print
5) The 2nd and subsequent trading pages and their associated statements will then be displayed in the Return Viewer
6) Click on Save in the Viewer toolbar and then attach the PDF to your FBI submission

Q: I am trying to import a set of accounts from an SNF file via the clipboard method on a partnership return and I get an error code 9, subscript out of range error
A: This was a known issue within the program but has been amended in version 5.119-0 of the software. This update can be accessed via the spanner icon, support / web updates tab, or from the software updates section of the website

Q: I have completed a partnership return where the turnover is less then £68000 in box 3.24 and have also completed box 3.22. When I am trying to file the return online I am getting a validation error 6960 as the value from box 3.22 is passed to page 2 (HMRC page4), box 3.70 which is causing a validation error on box 3.73.
A: This was an issue with the first release of the partnership return 2010 software but this has been resolved in version 5.1.12 which can be downloaded through the spanner icon, web updates tab of the program, or via the software updates section of the website

Q: When you try to print a partnership return with no trade pages it generates an error message “Error code 3021, M – no current record”
A: you will need to view the partnership return and click “view / enter details for trade / source” and then enter the description of the partnership trade or profession to enable the partnership return to be completed and printed

Q: I have completed a partnership return and imported the Accounts from the PTP Accounts package and this is bringing through assets with 20% WDA into box 3.16 instead of 3.14A
A: This was an issue with the first release of the partnership return 2010 software but this has been resolved in version 5.1.12 which can be downloaded through the spanner icon, web updates tab of the program, or via the software updates section of the website

Q:  I am printing a Partnership Tax Return through FBI but I have only got the Short Partnership Statement when it ought to be Full.  It prints correctly through the Print Tax Return button on the Clients Tax Return tab.
A:  This issue has been raised with the development team.  The workaround is to print to pdf instead of directly to the printer.  If the return is still in FBI and has not yet been submitted you can select the Reprint Return button, choosing to output to pdf.

Q:  I am printing a Partnership Tax Return where the partners commenced some years ago.  Their date of commencement is appearing in box 7 on the Partnership Statement even if the date is not in either the current tax year or prior tax year.
A:  This issue has been raised with the development team.  The workaround is to temporarily remove the date commenced from the Add/Amend/Remove Partners screen.

Q:  I made an entry in the Capital Allowances section on page 1 of the Trade pages and clicked to view page 2 of the Trade pages before I had entered the accounting period dates in boxes 3.4 and 3.5.  Now I cannot exit page 2.
A:  This has been raised with the development team and we hope to resolve this in a future release.  The workaround is to End Task in Task Manager to close out of the software.  You may find that this return is locked when you try to go back into it.  In this case you will need to close all users out of all PTP programs or, alternatively, open the Spanner Icon and go to the Security tab, enter the User Name and Password (the default user name is PTP and password is MASTER) and go to the fourth tab 'Users with Locked Returns'. Then you will see any users with locked returns and you can use the 'Unlock Returns for the selected User' button.

Q:  I have entered a date ceased against one of my partners in the Add/Amend/Delete Partners screen but now, when I click on the View Partner Percentages & Dates button, that partner no longer shows so I cannot amend their basis period dates or percentages.
A:  This issue has been raised with the development team and we hope to resolve this in a future release.  The workaround is to remove the date ceased from the Add/Amend/Delete Partners screen and complete the rest of the return first, only entering the date ceased as the final step.

Q: I am trying to complete a partnership return with multiple trades and although I am being advised of a workaround due to it being a HMRC special case, it does not allow me to follow the workaround and file the return online
A: This was an issue with the first release of the partnership return 2010 software but this has been resolved in version 5.1.12 which can be downloaded through the spanner icon, web updates tab of the program, or via the software updates section of the website

2009 specific FAQ's

Q: I am trying to view a 2009 partnership return and I am getting a message that says “your tax return database needs updating to the new version, another user on the network is preventing the update”
A: This suggests a new service pack has been applied to the software and so you will need to first view an individual tax return for 2009, and this will then update the database tables and then allow access to the partnership return.
